Miami-Dade Felon Convicted of Gun Possession

MIAMI – A Miami-Dade County man has been convicted by a jury of being a felon in possession of a firearm, marking a significant victory in the ongoing battle against violent crime in the community. Jarod Montell Alonso, also known as “Rob Dough,” was found guilty after a three-day trial before U.S. District Judge Beth Bloom.

Alonso’s conviction stems from a chilling incident where he shoved an AK-47 into the face of a 50-year-old grandmother as she exited a local corner store. His audacious threat to kill her was quickly followed by his capture minutes later, after which he defiantly told officers, “I run that block.”

During Alonso’s arrest at a nearby apartment, police uncovered the firearm used in the assault hidden in a child’s bedroom. The defendant has an extensive criminal history, including previous convictions for attempted first-degree murder.

As an armed career criminal, Alonso now faces a minimum sentence of 15 years in prison. He is scheduled to be sentenced on April 17, 2015, at 9:00 a.m.

The case was the result of collaborative efforts by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and the Miami Police Department (MPD). The Violence Reduction Partnership, initiated by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, has been instrumental in tackling violent criminal networks across various neighborhoods.

U.S. Attorney Wifredo A. Ferrer commended the investigative efforts of ATF and MPD, as well as Assistant U.S. Attorneys Breezye Telfair and Benjamin Widlanski for their prosecution of the case.
