PITTSBURGH – The streets of Pittsburgh are buzzing with news as Milton Garcia-Lopez, a 25-year-old Guatemalan national, finds himself in hot water once again. United States Attorney David J. Hickton has announced that Garcia-Lopez has been indicted by a federal grand jury on a single charge: re-entry into the United States after deportation.
The grim details of Garcia-Lopez’s past reveal that he was removed from the U.S. by United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement back in April 2007. However, his cunning return to the Steel City came to light following his arrest on May 27, 2013.
Under federal law, Garcia-Lopez now faces a maximum sentence of two years in prison, a fine that could soar to $250,000, or a combination of both penalties. The actual sentence will hinge on the severity of the offense and any prior criminal record.
Assistant United States Attorney Paul E. Hull is the lead prosecutor in this case, representing the government’s interests. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has been instrumental in investigating and leading to the indictment of Garcia-Lopez.
As with any federal case, an indictment is merely an accusation. Garcia-Lopez will be presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
