Kevin Ray Williamson, 51, of Marietta, Georgia, is behind bars, facing federal charges for a string of six armed bank robberies that terrorized North Georgia for over eight months. From February to September 2016, Williamson allegedly stormed into banks armed with a black handgun, pointed it at tellers, and demanded cash — striking locations in Marietta, Atlanta, and Johns Creek.
On February 4, 2016, it began. Williamson walked into a Fifth Third Bank in Marietta, leveled a handgun at a teller, and ordered her to fill his messenger bag with cash. Surveillance footage captured every second — the weapon, the demand, the fear. The same bag and gun reappeared in five more robberies, linking Williamson to each through forensic video analysis and investigative legwork.
By April 1, he hit a Regions Bank in Marietta, again flashing the handgun, opening the bag, and walking out with money. The same face from the Fifth Third footage stared back at FBI analysts. On May 25, it was a BB&T Bank — same script, same terror. July 13 brought a PNC Bank holdup. August 22, Fidelity Bank in Atlanta. Then, on September 8, Williamson allegedly struck Renasant Bank in Johns Creek, demanding cash from multiple drawers while brandishing the firearm.
“Williamson is alleged to have committed a series of armed bank robberies that kept bank employees and citizens on edge for over eight months,” said U.S. Attorney John Horn. “The arrest and indictment in this case put an end to an active, eight-month crime spree, and hopefully returned a sense of safety to the community in Marietta, where most of the robberies occurred.\”
“These robberies were particularly egregious in that many of the victim tellers had to endure having a handgun pointed directly at them,” said George Crouch, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Atlanta Field Office. “The FBI will continue to make those who bring this type of violent crime into our communities a priority matter.\”
Williamson was arraigned before U.S. Magistrate Judge Janet F. King on October 26, 2016, one day after a federal grand jury returned the indictment. He faces multiple counts of armed bank robbery. Assistant United States Attorney Suzette A. Smikle is prosecuting the case. The FBI led the investigation. The defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt at trial.
