Simon Peter Danielson, Cocaine Smuggling, FL 2024

Simon Peter Danielson, a 37-year-old from Vancouver, British Columbia, was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison today for orchestrating a high-seas cocaine run that ended with bricks of the drug dumped into the Caribbean. The sentence, handed down by U.S. District Judge Elizabeth A. Kovachevich in Tampa, Florida, marks the end of a transnational manhunt that exposed the brutal logistics of international drug smuggling.

Danielson pleaded guilty in May 2016 to charges tied to the attempted transport of 250 kilograms of cocaine by sailboat from the Caribbean to Canada’s east coast. The vessel, identified as the SV Liberty, was intercepted in international waters—82 miles northwest of Aruba—by a Royal Netherlands Navy warship working in coordination with U.S. law enforcement.

As the Dutch vessel closed in, members of the U.S. Coast Guard Law Enforcement Detachment (LEDET) 405 witnessed Danielson frantically tossing kilogram-sized bundles overboard. The sight of white bricks vanishing into the churning sea confirmed their suspicions: the SV Liberty was a floating drug mule.

After boarding, the LEDET team recovered nine bales of cocaine, totaling approximately 250 kilograms. Forensic analysis confirmed the shipment’s purity and market value, which could have netted millions on North American streets. The bust disrupted a major supply chain believed to be linked to South American cartels and Canadian distribution networks.

The investigation was a multinational effort led by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Critical support came from the U.S. Coast Guard, the Royal Netherlands Navy, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police—highlighting the global reach of modern drug enforcement.

Assistant United States Attorney Eric K. Gerard prosecuted the case, arguing for a stiff sentence given the scale of the operation and Danielson’s attempt to destroy evidence. The 10-year sentence reflects the federal crackdown on international narcotics trafficking—a trade that fuels violence, addiction, and corruption from the Caribbean to Canadian cities.
