United States Attorney Randolph J. Seiler dropped a heavy sentence on a Sioux Falls, South Dakota, resident, Eugene Ogden, who has been found guilty of Cyberstalking and was handed a 30-month prison term by U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier on March 22, 2017.
Ogden, aged 55, also faces three years of supervised release and is compelled to pay $100 into the Federal Crime Victims Fund as part of his punishment. The court’s decision came after Ogden’s guilty plea on November 21, 2016, following an indictment by a federal grand jury on August 9, 2016.
The victim in this harrowing case reported to the Sioux Falls Police Department in July 2016 that she was receiving visits from strange men who claimed to be responding to a Craigslist ad for sexual encounters. It was discovered that Ogden had posted eight such ads on Craigslist, offering explicit invitations to the victim’s home and providing her address along with photos of her.
“This is Cyberstalking at its ugliest,” said U.S. Attorney Randy Seiler in a stern statement. “The sentence serves as a stark reminder that these cases will be pursued to the fullest extent of the law, no matter how malicious or easily executed they may seem in the digital realm.”
The Sioux Falls Police Department and the Department of Homeland Security Investigations conducted the investigation into Ogden’s criminal activities. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey C. Clapper was responsible for prosecuting the case.
Upon the completion of his sentence, Ogden will be immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
