BOCA RATON, FL – Federal prosecutors have handed down severe sentences to nine defendants in a massive insurance fraud scheme involving the manufacture and distribution of compounded medications.
The sentencing of Benjamin G. Greenberg, Adolphus P. Wright, Kelly R. Jackson, and Michael J. Satz marks the culmination of an investigation that charged sixteen individuals for their roles in the elaborate fraud, which generated over $172 million in criminal proceeds.
The defendants, including Clifford Carroll of Boca Raton and Dr. Peter Williams of New Port Richey, were sentenced to sentences ranging from 24 months to 180 months’ imprisonment. The court also ordered them to forfeit more than $30 million in assets.
United States District Judge Daniel T. K. Hurley imposed the sentences after finding that the scheme involved material misrepresentations to health insurance providers and illegal payments to coconspirators and medical professionals, including physicians. The defendants used various entities like Numed Care, LLC, ClinicalCorp, LLC, RX of Boca, and American Custom Compound Pharmacy to perpetrate the fraud.
In addition to the sentences, a hearing will be held at a later date to determine the amount of restitution owed to the government by each defendant. All sixteen defendants have pleaded guilty, with the remaining sentences set for May.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Paul F. Schwartz and Jeffrey N. Kaplan are prosecuting the case, which has been hailed as a significant victory for law enforcement agencies including the DEA, IRS-CI, and the Broward State Attorney’s Office.
