Jovon McClures, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, FL 2024

Fort Myers felon Jovon McClures, 40, is headed to federal prison for 15 years after being caught with a loaded firearm in his jacket pocket during a public disturbance. The conviction hits hard in a city battling street violence, and sends a sharp message: felons caught armed will face serious federal time.

On January 29, 2017, Fort Myers Police responded to a loud argument in an apartment complex parking lot. What started as a noise complaint turned criminal when officers discovered a loaded firearm tucked inside McClures’s jacket. At that moment, the record showed he was legally barred from possessing any firearm or ammunition due to prior felony convictions.

U.S. District Judge Sheri Polster Chappell handed down the 15-year sentence with no room for leniency. As part of the ruling, McClures was also ordered to forfeit the weapon used in the offense — a standard but symbolic move in federal gun cases targeting repeat offenders.

McClures pleaded guilty on October 31, 2017, cutting short a prosecution built on solid evidence from both local and federal investigators. By admitting guilt, he avoided a trial but still faced the full weight of federal sentencing laws for armed career criminals.

The case was investigated jointly by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Fort Myers Police Department. It was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Simon R. Eth, who emphasized public safety in securing the stiff penalty.

This conviction is another notch in the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative, a nationwide push to slash violent crime through targeted prosecutions. In the Middle District of Florida, U.S. Attorney Maria Chapa Lopez leads coordination between federal, state, and local agencies to keep guns out of the hands of violent offenders — and McClures is the latest example of the program’s reach.
