Thomas Brooks, Felon Gun Possession, Delaware 2023

Thomas Brooks, 54, of Wilmington, is headed to federal prison for 15 years after being convicted of conspiracy to distribute cocaine, possession with intent to distribute heroin and cocaine, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and using a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. This marks Brooks’ sixth conviction for drug-related offenses, cementing his status as a repeat offender in Delaware’s underground drug trade.

According to court documents and testimony, Brooks operated as a key sub-distributor in a sprawling narcotics network, moving at least one kilogram of cocaine during the fall of 2016. Wiretaps and digital evidence captured dozens of phone calls and text messages linking Brooks directly to drug transactions, exposing the breadth of his operation and his central role in the conspiracy.

The violence erupted on November 3, 2016, when three armed intruders broke into Brooks’ home. One of the suspects opened fire, shooting another person inside the residence. Brooks responded by firing his own weapon. Police arrived to find a loaded handgun, 123 grams of cocaine, and 14 grams of heroin stashed inside the home. Brooks fled the scene and vanished—later apprehended in Minnesota.

U.S. Attorney David C. Weiss made it clear: ‘Guns and drugs are a lethal combination and a scourge on our community, and today’s sentence reflects the danger posed by defendant’s conduct.’ He pledged continued federal action against those who arm themselves to protect and advance their drug operations in Delaware.

FBI Baltimore Special Agent in Charge Gordon B. Johnson emphasized interagency success: ‘Today’s sentencing is indicative of the success that can be attained when agencies combine resources to remove violent drug distributors off the street.’ The FBI reaffirmed its commitment to dismantling drug networks through collaboration with local, state, and federal partners.

Wilmington Police Chief Robert J. Tracy credited the collective effort behind the conviction, stating, ‘The sentencing in this case is a result of everyone’s great work.’ The investigation was led by the FBI Delaware Violent Crime Safe Streets Taskforce, with support from the Wilmington Police Department and Delaware Attorney General’s Office. Prosecution was handled by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher L. de Barrena-Sarobe and Assistant U.S. Attorney Alexander S. Mackler.
