BOSTON – In a gritty victory for law enforcement, Dominican national Juan Anibal Patrone, the iron-fisted leader of a Lawrence-based heroin and fentanyl syndicate, has been sentenced to 12 years in federal prison. The sentence was handed down by U.S. Senior District Court Judge Douglas P. Woodlock, who also imposed five years of supervised release on the 29-year-old.
Patron’s reign of terror ended following a massive operation in May 2017 that dismantled his organization and its supply chain, which stretched from Lawrence to New Hampshire and Maine. Alongside Patrone, approximately 28 co-conspirators were apprehended, including Santo Ramon Gonzalez Nival, another key figure who sourced drugs for the syndicate.
Patron’s business model was as brazen as it was brutal, with his organization functioning like a well-oiled machine. He secured stash houses, paid handlers to package drugs, and orchestrated deliveries via a network of couriers. Patrone’s reach extended beyond state lines as he directed redistributors from New Hampshire and Maine to purchase narcotics for distribution outside Massachusetts.
Intercepted calls revealed Patrone’s intention to return to the Dominican Republic upon completing his sentence, where he planned to leave the drug trade behind. His assets in the Dominican Republic are now targeted by the government, which aims to freeze and forfeit them as part of his punishment.
The operation was a collaborative effort, with United States Attorney Andrew E. Lelling; Brian D. Boyle of the Drug Enforcement Administration; and Peter C. Fitzhugh of Homeland Security Investigations leading the charge. The Massachusetts State Police and various local police departments were instrumental in the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Theodore Heinrich prosecuted the case.
A search of Patrone’s home yielded a 10mm Auto-Ordnance Corp, equipped with ammunition, further illustrating the ruthless nature of his operation.
