Tiffany Richardson, 30, Pleads Guilty to Disaster Relief Fraud in Louisiana
In a stunning case of disaster relief fraud, Tiffany Richardson, a 30-year-old resident of Chalmette, Louisiana, has pleaded guilty to one count of disaster relief fraud before United States District Court Judge Susie Morgan. Richardson’s crime is a stark reminder that those who would seek to take advantage of the system will be held accountable.
According to the charging document, Richardson applied for disaster assistance from the Small Business Administration following tornadoes that struck Oklahoma in 2013. However, Richardson falsely claimed that she had a primary residence in an affected area of Oklahoma, when in fact, she lived in Chalmette, which is within the Eastern District of Louisiana.
Richardson’s scheme was uncovered by the Small Business Administration, Office of Inspector General and the Department of Homeland Security, who praised U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans for his role in bringing Richardson to justice. Assistant U.S. Attorney Edward J. Rivera is in charge of the prosecution.
Richardson faces a sentence of up to thirty (30) years in prison, up to $250,000 in fines, and up to three (3) years of supervised release. Sentencing is set for June 28, 2018.
The case serves as a warning to those who would seek to take advantage of the system. As U.S. Attorney Evans noted, ‘those who would seek to defraud the system will be held accountable.’ Richardson’s guilty plea is a testament to the dedication of law enforcement agencies to protecting the public from those who would seek to harm them.
The people of Louisiana can rest easy knowing that those who would seek to take advantage of the system will be held accountable. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as more information becomes available.
