Cody Davis, Armed Carjacking, TN 2024

Cody Davis, 28, a convicted felon, has pleaded guilty to armed carjacking and brandishing a firearm in a violent crime. The incident occurred in Memphis, Tennessee, where the victim was asleep in his Audi A4 when approached by Davis. According to court records, Davis took the victim’s cell phone, ordered him out of the vehicle, and drove off with the car, which was captured on surveillance video.

Days later, the Audi was recovered, containing a cell phone with fingerprints belonging to Davis. On January 4, 2019, detectives observed Davis entering a vehicle from his residence, leading to his arrest. A loaded pistol was found under the driver’s seat. Davis waived his Miranda rights and confessed to the crime.

The investigation revealed that the Century Arms 9mm pistol and the Audi were manufactured outside Tennessee. Davis is prohibited by federal law from possessing firearms due to prior felony convictions, including robbery and aggravated burglary. He pleaded guilty before U.S. District Court Judge Mark S. Norris on August 19, 2020, and faces a mandatory minimum of 15 years up to life imprisonment.

U.S. Attorney D. Michael Dunavant emphasized the Carjacking Initiative’s focus on aggressive prosecution of such cases. ‘There is a heavy price to pay for recidivist violence,’ he said, adding that Davis would serve a significant sentence in federal prison, hoping to deter others from committing similar crimes.

This case was investigated by the Memphis Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Samuel D. Winnig is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government, representing Shelby County District Attorney General’s Office in federal court.
