Brooklyn Park, MN – United States Attorney Ron Parsons announced that Justice May Yang, 25, of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, has been sentenced to five years in federal prison for conspiring to make a false statement during the purchase of a firearm. The sentence was handed down on August 10, 2020, by U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier.
Yang was also ordered to pay $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund and will serve three years of supervised release following her prison term. She pleaded guilty on May 27, 2020, after being indicted by a federal grand jury on June 6, 2019.
The crime spree began in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where Yang purchased a Ruger model SR 40, 40 caliber semi-automatic handgun, despite being a fugitive. She completed ATF Form 4473, falsely stating she was the actual buyer, and kept the firearm. Later, she acquired another Ruger model 9E handgun in similar fashion, taking possession of it after her acquaintance falsified his details on the form.
On August 12, 2017, Yang sought yet another gun online, a Ruger SR 40C, which was bought for her by an accomplice using false information. The firearm was delivered to Madison, Wisconsin, where it was received by Yang.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) and the Department of Justice’s Project Guardian initiative, aimed at reducing gun violence and enforcing federal firearms laws. For more on Project Guardian, visit here.
