WASHINGTON — The grimy details of the Jan. 6 Capitol breach have brought another culprit to justice. A North Carolina man, Aiden Henry Bilyard, 19, from Cary, N.C., faces a mountain of charges for his alleged role in the lawless chaos that day.
Bilyard is charged with engaging in physical violence in a restricted building or grounds, civil disorder, and assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers with a dangerous weapon. He was nabbed yesterday in Raleigh and swiftly appeared before a North Carolina court, where he was released on bond pending further proceedings.
According to the grim revelations of court documents, at 2:35 p.m., Bilyard is seen among the rabble, waving a large gold-colored canister. Video shows him directing its contents toward law enforcement and unleashing an orange spray. The substance is believed to be bear spray, a chemical irritant used by rioters to disable officers.
Later in the afternoon, footage catches Bilyard encouraging violence against the Capitol’s glass windows. After smashing through the lower part with a bat, he reportedly entered a Senate room, a clear act of defiance amidst the chaos.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and the DOJ’s National Security Division are leading this prosecution, while the FBI Charlotte Field Office is investigating. Since Jan. 6, over 675 individuals have been arrested across the country, with Bilyard joining the ranks of those facing justice for their part in the Capitol’s breach.
