A 53-year-old Florida resident has been handed a stiff sentence for her role in a brazen scheme to steal her deceased grandmother’s Social Security benefits.
Lori Shaffer, of Hudson, Florida, was sentenced in federal court to 60 days’ imprisonment and three years’ supervised release on her conviction of theft of government property, announced United States Attorney Cindy K. Chung.
The sentence was imposed by United States District Judge Mark R. Hornak, who described Shaffer’s actions as a ‘serious theft of taxpayers’ contributions to the Social Security system.’
According to court documents, Shaffer stole approximately $43,672 in Survivor’s Insurance Benefits from the United States Social Security Administration between July 2013 and October 2017. The payments were intended for her deceased grandmother, but Shaffer knew she was not entitled to them.
Assistant United States Attorney Carolyn J. Bloch prosecuted the case on behalf of the government, while United States Attorney Chung commended the Social Security Administration (SSA), Office of Inspector General for their role in the investigation.
The court also ordered Shaffer to pay restitution to the Social Security Administration in the amount of $43,672, bringing an end to a case that has been years in the making.
Shaffer’s premeditated actions have left a lasting impact on the community, and her sentence serves as a reminder that those who commit such crimes will be held accountable for their actions.
