Zachary A. Myers, National Night Out, Indiana 2023

The streets of Indianapolis will see a wave of community events as the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Indiana joins forces with local organizers, law enforcement, and neighbors to participate in National Night Out on August 1, 2023.

Millions of Americans will take part in this annual community-building campaign, which promotes partnerships and camaraderie between law enforcement and the communities they serve to make our neighborhoods safer places to live.

A statement from U.S. Attorney Zachary A. Myers highlights the importance of building trust between law enforcement and the public, ‘A positive, ongoing relationship between neighbors and law enforcement is vital to building trust and keeping the public safe.’ He further emphasized that community events like National Night Out allow community members to place a friendly face to the law enforcement agencies that serve to protect them.

National Night Out events often include block parties, cookouts, festivals, parades, safety demonstrations, seminars, youth events, and visits from emergency personnel. These gatherings send a message that neighbors are united and working together to keep their communities and each other safe.

Established in 1984 with funding from the Bureau of Justice Assistance, National Night Out is a nationwide non-profit program administered by the National Association of Town Watch. Local law enforcement agencies and trained volunteers coordinate these events to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.

National Night Out is more than just a community event; it’s a movement. By working together, law enforcement and community members can build a safer and more trusting society. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Indiana is committed to being a part of this movement and will continue to participate in National Night Out events in the years to come.
