Grimy Times Exclusive: New York State Assemblyman Embroiled in Mail Fraud Conspiracy

New York State Assemblyman William F. Boyland, Jr. has been charged with mail fraud conspiracy for defrauding the state of New York, according to a federal indictment unsealed today.

The 42-year-old assemblyman, who has served in the New York State Assembly since 2003, allegedly steered public funds to a Brooklyn-based non-profit organization and used a portion of those funds to pay for community events promoting himself and his campaign, including the distribution of t-shirts imprinted with the slogan "Team Boyland."

To conceal the scheme, Boyland allegedly directed his staff to instruct vendors to falsely list the non-profit organization as the purchaser on invoices for goods purchased for the events. A representative of the non-profit then submitted the fraudulent invoices to the New York State Office for the Aging without disclosing that the funds were being used for partisan political activity.

The scheme allegedly ran from July 2007 to September 2010, during which time Boyland was the assemblyman representing the 55th District in Brooklyn.

The indictment was announced by Loretta E. Lynch, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, and George Venizelos, Assistant Director-in-Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s New York Field Office.

If convicted, Boyland faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and restitution.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Robert Capers and Lan Nguyen.

Boyland has maintained a reputation as a strong advocate for his constituents, but his alleged actions have raised serious questions about his integrity and commitment to public service.
