In a shocking turn of events, MD Hossain Morshed, a 50-year-old former Atlantic City councilman, has pleaded guilty to submitting false voter registrations in New Jersey.

According to documents filed in the case, Morshed gave a prospective voter a New Jersey voter registration application that had already been filled out and which falsely asserted that the prospective voter had a residential address in the Fourth Ward, the ward that Morshed represented on the Atlantic City Council.

Morshed urged the prospective voter to sign the application, and subsequently visited the voter at their actual residence and presented them with a vote-by-mail application to sign, which included the same false Fourth Ward Atlantic City address.

The Atlantic County Superintendent of Elections subsequently received the falsified voter registration application, and the Atlantic County Board of Elections received the completed mail-in ballot, which was counted towards the June 2019 primary election.

However, the prospective voter later admitted that they did not receive, complete, or return the mail-in ballot.

During lawfully recorded conversations between the voter and Morshed concerning possible questioning by law enforcement, Morshed directed the voter to make false representations about where they lived and who filled out the voter forms.

“When you sign up to serve in public office, you are, and should be, held to a higher standard,” said FBI – Newark Special Agent in Charge James E. Dennehy. “Morshed admits he knowingly committed voter fraud, and then directed others to lie about it.”

The U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger credited special agents of the FBI, the FBI’s Newark, Atlantic City Resident Agency’s Public Corruption Task Force, the Atlantic City Police Department, the New Jersey State Police, and the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office for their role in uncovering Morshed’s efforts.

Sentencing is scheduled for July 16, 2024. The case is a stark reminder of the importance of upholding the integrity of our elections and holding public officials accountable for their actions.”
