Daytrell Washington-Roby, Possession of Ammunition by a Felon, Iowa 2024

A 26-year-old Waterloo, Iowa man, Daytrell Washington-Roby, has been sentenced to seven years in federal prison for pointing a firearm at a police officer following a violent altercation on February 18, 2024.

According to court records, Washington-Roby was released from federal prison on December 22, 2023, after serving a sentence for possession of a firearm by a user of a controlled substance. Less than two months later, he was involved in a disturbance where a concerned citizen called 911 to report a man choking a woman in a car. Washington-Roby’s girlfriend was also present.

When police arrived at the scene, Washington-Roby raised his arms, pointing a loaded, unserialized ‘ghost gun’ at the officer. He then discarded the firearm in the backyard of a nearby residence. Washington-Roby was on federal supervised release at the time of the incident.

Washington-Roby pleaded guilty to possession of ammunition by a felon on July 1, 2024. In addition to the seven-year prison term, he was also sentenced to a three-year term of supervised release after his prison term.

The case against Washington-Roby was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kyndra Lundquist and investigated by a Federal Task Force composed of the Waterloo Police Department, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms, assisted by the Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office and Cedar Falls Police Department.

The Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) program played a significant role in addressing violent crime and gun violence in the community. The PSN initiative brings together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and make neighborhoods safer.

Washington-Roby is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison. His case is part of a larger effort to address gun violence and violent crime in Iowa.
