Topeka Man Uses Federal Grant Funds as Shopping Money
A former employee of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation (PBPN) has pleaded guilty to misapplying thousands of dollars the tribe received in federal grants. Cody L. Williams, 39, of Topeka, Kansas, used the funds to purchase sports memorabilia.
According to court documents, Williams was a former employee of the PBPN, which received federal grants for various projects. Instead of using the funds as intended, Williams misapplied the money for personal gain.
The investigation revealed that Williams used approximately $10,000 in federal grant funds to purchase sports memorabilia, which he sold for a profit. Williams pleaded guilty to one count of misapplication of funds, a felony offense.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the United States Department of the Interior, Office of the Inspector General. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Kansas prosecuted the case.
Williams is scheduled to be sentenced on August 14, 2023. He faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 for his crimes.
The misuse of federal grant funds is a serious offense, and those who engage in such activities will face the full force of the law. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability and transparency in the use of public funds.
The Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation has taken steps to ensure that the misuse of federal grant funds does not occur in the future.
