Pendleton, OR – In a shocking turn of events, Ryan Michael Martinez (32), of Pendleton, Oregon, pleaded guilty yesterday on the second day of trial to attempted murder, robbery, and felon in possession of a firearm (Armed Career Criminal Act) related to an armed robbery of the Wildhorse Resort and Casino on the Umatilla Indian Reservation in 2022.
According to the Department of Justice, Martinez is accused of robbing the casino on November 15, 2022, and in the process, shot a casino employee, who miraculously survived the ordeal.
The charges against Martinez include attempted murder, robbery, and felon in possession of a firearm, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence linking Martinez to the crime scene, including security footage and witness testimony.
Martinez’s guilty plea comes as a relief to the community, who were on edge as the trial progressed.
The sentencing hearing for Martinez is scheduled for May 15, 2024, where he will face a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Attorney’s Office commended the bravery of the casino employee and the swift action of law enforcement in apprehending Martinez.
