Jorge Luis Sandoval, Bribery, Texas 2012

A former corrections officer at the East Hidalgo Detention Center in La Villa, Texas, has been sentenced to prison for smuggling cellular telephones into the facility for an inmate.

Jorge Luis Sandoval, 32, of Pharr, was handed a 12-month and one-day prison term by Chief U.S. District Judge Ricardo H. Hinojosa, who also ordered two years of supervised release.

Sandoval pleaded guilty to one count of bribery on July 3, 2012, after admitting to accepting a cash payment from an individual acting on behalf of a federal inmate in exchange for smuggling a cellular telephone into the prison on two occasions.

According to court documents, Sandoval used his official position as a corrections officer to enrich himself by accepting the bribe, which was facilitated by his greed.

Chief Judge Hinojosa noted that Sandoval’s actions not only demonstrated a total disrespect for the law but also gave the public the impression that everyone who takes on the job of a correctional officer is willing to do the same.

He further stated that Sandoval’s actions hurt the reputation of those who work for the government and law enforcement, and that one of the worst damages that comes from a situation like this is that it undermines the trust and confidence of the public in the correctional system.

The investigation leading to the charge in this case was conducted by the FBI and the U.S. Marshals Service, with Assistant United States Attorney Casey N. MacDonald prosecuting the case and AUSA Linda Requenez handling the sentencing hearing.

Sandoval was allowed to self-surrender to the U.S. Marshals Service on January 28, 2013, to begin serving his sentence, pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility to be determined in the near future.

The case serves as a reminder of the importance of integrity and accountability in the correctional system, and the severe consequences that come with violating the public trust.
