A correction officer at the New York City Department of Correction swiped $80,000 in military leave pay from taxpayers, claiming she was on state active duty in the Navy Reserve. Leah Mathieu, a Sailor in the United States Navy Reserve and New York Naval Militia, used forged documents to collect the cash from December 2022 to March 2024.
Mathieu, 35, made false representations and provided fake military orders to the DOC, claiming she was entitled to leave from her employment. The scheme was finally exposed, and she pleaded guilty to the charges.
As a correction officer and a member of the military, Mathieu was supposed to uphold the law and integrity of her positions. Instead, she broke the trust of her colleagues and the public she served.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York and the New York City Department of Investigation partnered to bring Mathieu to justice.
