Bad Hand faces Sex Offender Registration Charges

John Burgess Bad Hand, a 37-year-old from Upper Cut Meat, South Dakota, is facing serious federal charges for failing to register as a sex offender. According to Acting United States Attorney Dennis Holmes, Bad Hand was indicted by a federal grand jury on November 9th, 2021.

Bad Hand appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on November 30th and entered a not guilty plea. If convicted, the defendant could be sentenced to up to ten years in federal prison, a fine of $250,000, five years of supervised release, and a contribution of $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

The Indictment alleges that Bad Hand, who was required by federal law to register as a sex offender due to previous convictions, knowingly failed to update his registration between September 15th and October 21st, 2021. Despite the serious nature of the charge, Bad Hand is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Investigating this case is the U.S. Marshals Service, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Abby Roesler handling the prosecution. Bad Hand has been remanded into federal custody and a trial date is yet to be set.

This incident underscores the importance of compliance with sex offender registration laws, which are designed to protect communities from potential threats. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case closely as it unfolds.
