GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: In a swift justice move, Shane McCloskey, 23, from Rapid City, South Dakota, has been sentenced to 18 months behind bars for illegal possession of an unregistered firearm. The sentence was imposed by U.S. Circuit Judge Jonathan A. Kobes on January 31, 2023.
Mccloskey’s sentence also includes three years of supervised release and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. His crime spree began in October 2021 when he was caught with a SCCY, model CPX-2, 9mm Luger caliber semi-automatic pistol, despite being a previously convicted felon.
The case stems from Mccloskey’s arrest by law enforcement in Rapid City, where authorities discovered the firearm upon his contact with police. Indicted for Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person in February 2022, he pleaded guilty on October 7, 2022.
This sentencing is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative designed to reduce violent crime and gun violence across the nation. The Department of Justice launched a strategic crime reduction program on May 26, 2021, emphasizing community trust, prevention, focused enforcement, and measurable results.
Investigation into this case was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, alongside the Rapid City Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Patterson handled the prosecution.
Mccloskey has been remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service until his sentence is completed.
