Hoover Gangster Bagsby Gets 24 Months for Illegal Firearm

PORTLAND, Ore. – Another cog in the Hoover Criminal Gang machine is off the streets. Anthony Devion Bagsby, 31, of Portland, was sentenced to 24 months in federal prison and 3 years of supervised release today for the simple fact of being a convicted felon illegally packing heat. The case is a direct result of a long-running federal investigation into the gang’s activities.

The feds started building their case with digital breadcrumbs – online photos showing Bagsby, already a convicted felon, clearly possessing firearms. Investigators then zeroed in on a northeast Portland apartment on Halsey Street, a known haunt for Hoover members. Surveillance confirmed Bagsby’s frequent visits. On April 16, 2021, they hit the apartment with a federal search warrant, and Bagsby, along with others, were taken into custody.

The search didn’t disappoint. A loaded Springfield XD-40 handgun was recovered from a kitchen basket. Disturbingly, three of the rounds loaded in the weapon were painted blue. Beyond the gun, investigators found a constellation of evidence linking Bagsby to the location: prescription medication in his name, personal mail, and an empty 9mm magazine. Scattered nearby were several dozen 9mm cartridges, four .40 caliber rounds – including *another* blue round matching those in the handgun – and a baggie containing methamphetamine.

Adding insult to injury, a review of Bagsby’s phone revealed text messages where he openly bragged about acquiring a “brand new XD 40.” On July 20, 2021, a federal grand jury slapped Bagsby with two counts of illegally possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. He finally pleaded guilty on October 18, 2022, likely hoping for leniency – a hope clearly not realized by the judge.

This wasn’t a solo operation. The FBI spearheaded the investigation, with crucial support from the Portland Police Bureau, Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office, Gresham Police Department, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The prosecution was handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon. This case falls under the umbrella of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a Department of Justice initiative aimed at reducing violent crime through focused enforcement and community partnerships.

The takedown of Bagsby is also a victory for the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF). This multi-agency task force targets high-level drug traffickers and criminal organizations. They don’t mess around with street-level dealers; they go after the heads of the snake. This prosecution sends a clear message: if you’re involved in organized crime and illegally armed, you *will* face federal consequences. Bagsby’s 24-month sentence is just the beginning, and the feds are still peeling back the layers of the Hoover Criminal Gang’s operations in Portland.
