Omaha’s Robert Rush, a 29-year-old kingpin of a fentanyl distribution ring, was sentenced to 180 months in federal prison on February 3, 2023, for conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute ten grams or more of an analogue of fentanyl. The sentence, handed down by Chief United States District Judge Robert F. Rossiter, Jr., leaves no room for parole in the federal system, and after his release, Rush will face a grueling 4-year term of supervised release.
On March 1, 2020, the Omaha Police Department executed a search warrant at Rush’s residence, where they seized a stunning 1,029 fentanyl pills. The street value of these pills was set between $35 and $40 each. Tragically, one of those pills was sold to a woman who overdosed and died.
Rush’s co-defendant, Ja’Hvont Payne, was sentenced to 60 months’ imprisonment followed by a 4-year term of supervised release on February 11, 2022. However, Payne was not implicated in the distribution of the fentanyl that led to the woman’s death.
This case has been a hard-fought battle for law enforcement. The Omaha Police Department played a pivotal role in bringing this dangerous criminal to justice, ensuring that those involved in the illegal sale and distribution of deadly substances are held accountable.
Robert Rush’s sentence serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of fentanyl abuse and the need for strong action against those who profit from the sale of these lethal drugs. The community of Omaha can breathe a little easier today, knowing that one of its most dangerous distributors has been brought to justice.
The case against Rush was part of an ongoing effort by federal agencies to combat the fentanyl crisis that has engulfed the United States, particularly in areas like Nebraska where such substances have caused countless overdoses and deaths. As the war on drugs continues, law enforcement agencies will remain vigilant in their pursuit of those who would bring harm to innocent citizens.
