Isaac Goodface, Domestic Assault, South Dakota 2023

Lower Brule Man Sentenced for Habitual Domestic Assaults

Piercing the veil of domestic violence, a Lower Brule man has been brought to justice for his brutal crimes.

Isaac Goodface, a 32-year-old from Lower Brule, South Dakota, has been sentenced to four years in federal prison for his role in two separate incidents of domestic assault on the Lower Brule Sioux Indian Reservation.

According to court documents, Goodface was first convicted of physically assaulting the same victim on two separate occasions in Lyman County. In September 2022, he threw the victim to the ground, strangled her, struck her about the head and face, and prevented her from leaving the residence.

Just over a year later, in June 2023, Goodface struck the victim on the face and pointed a gun at her during an argument. Despite the severity of the crimes, Goodface initially evaded justice, but eventually changed his plea to guilty on November 30, 2023.

The case was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office due to the Major Crimes Act, a federal statute that mandates violent crimes committed in Indian Country be prosecuted in Federal court. The Bureau of Indian Affairs – Office of Justice Services, Lower Brule Agency, conducted the investigation, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy R. Morley led the prosecution.

Goodface was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, and is required to pay a $200 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund as part of his sentence. This harsh sentence serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of domestic violence, and the commitment of law enforcement to hold perpetrators accountable.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office has demonstrated its unwavering dedication to protecting victims of domestic violence, and this case is a testament to that commitment. As the community continues to grapple with the devastating effects of domestic violence, it is crucial that we prioritize the safety and well-being of those affected.

Isaac Goodface’s sentencing serves as a beacon of hope for survivors of domestic violence, and a reminder that justice can be served, no matter how daunting the circumstances may seem.
