SCRANTON – In a sickening case of exploitation, Angelo Pereyra, 39, of Wichita, Kansas, and Andrew Ensanian, 38, of Montgomery, Pennsylvania, have been charged with trafficking in stolen human remains.
According to United States Attorney Gerard M. Karam, the charges stem from a multi-year investigation into the nationwide trafficking of stolen human remains. The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the United States Postal Inspection Service.
Between 2018 and 2022, Pereyra and Ensanian allegedly caused stolen human remains to be transported between Kansas and Pennsylvania, violating federal law. The maximum penalty under federal law for this offense is 10 years of imprisonment, a term of supervised release following imprisonment, and a fine.
The investigation has led to multiple charges and convictions. Three defendants have entered guilty pleas in the Middle District of Pennsylvania, while another defendant has been charged and convicted in Arkansas. No sentencing has yet occurred.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Sean A. Camoni is prosecuting the case, which has drawn national attention for its disturbing allegations.
The charges against Pereyra and Ensanian are a stark reminder of the darkest corners of human nature. The alleged trafficking of stolen human remains is a heinous crime that has no place in our society.
