Spenser Ware, Possession of Unregistered Firearms, Nebraska 2024

Lincoln Man Sentenced for ‘Ghost Guns’ Crime

A 35-year-old Lincoln man has gone down for running a firearms racket out of his security company, selling ‘ghost guns’ to people who can’t buy them legally.

Spenser Ware, 35, formerly of Lincoln, Nebraska, was sentenced to 42 months’ imprisonment in federal court in Lincoln for possession of firearms and ammunition by a prohibited person.

Senior United States District Judge Joseph F. Bataillon handed down the sentence, which comes with no parole in the federal system. Ware will begin a 3-year term of supervised release after his release from prison.

In October 2023, investigators received information that Ware was building firearms and selling them to individuals who couldn’t legally purchase them. At the time, Ware owned his own security company.

Investigators executed a search warrant at Ware’s residence, where they found five firearms, including several non-serialized ‘ghost guns’ with short barrels. Additionally, they discovered 12 receivers, high-capacity magazines, body armor, over 1,800 rounds of ammunition in different calibers, holsters, firearm assembly equipment, and magazines.

Ware admitted to ordering the gun parts and assembling the firearms himself. Investigators searched his phone and found multiple images of firearms dating back to 2021. An agent for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives examined the firearms and ammunition, determining they were manufactured outside the State of Nebraska.

Ware has felony convictions out of Florida, which prevents him from possessing firearms. This case was investigated by the Lincoln Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. The Department launched a violent crime reduction strategy in 2021, strengthening PSN based on core principles: fostering trust and legitimacy in communities, supporting community-based organizations, setting focused and strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring results.
