Anthony Patterson, a 62-year-old New Bedford man, pleaded guilty yesterday in federal court in Boston to fraudulently receiving Social Security disability benefits.
Patterson, who was charged in May 2024, collected Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits from 2013 to 2023, raking in $92,582 in benefits he wasn’t eligible for.
According to court documents, Patterson made sworn false statements to the Social Security Administration in 2012 and 2022 about his marital status and living situation to conceal household income and resources.
Patterson’s scheme involved collecting money meant for those with limited financial means. U.S. District Court Judge Allison D. Burroughs scheduled sentencing for Sept. 10, 2024.
The charge of theft of government money carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of $250,000 or twice the gross gain or loss, whichever is greater.
Acting United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy and Bradley Parker, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the Social Security Administration, Office of Inspector General, Office of Investigations, Boston Field Division made the announcement today.
Special Assistant U.S. Attorney James J. Nagelberg of the Major Crimes Unit is prosecuting the case.
