Anthony Patterson, Social Security Scam, Massachusetts 2024

BOSTON – Anthony Patterson, 62, of New Bedford is facing federal charges after allegedly ripping off the Social Security system for a decade, authorities announced today. Patterson is accused of fraudulently collecting $92,582 in disability benefits he wasn’t entitled to.

The Department of Justice, U.S. Attorney’s Office for Massachusetts, alleges Patterson’s scheme ran from May 2013 to May 2023. He’s been charged with one count of theft of government money – a serious federal offense that carries significant penalties.

If convicted, Patterson could be looking at up to 10 years behind bars. The potential sentence also includes a maximum of three years of supervised release following incarceration, and a hefty fine of $250,000, or twice the amount of money he allegedly stole, whichever is greater. A federal judge will ultimately determine the sentence, taking into account sentencing guidelines and relevant statutes.

Acting United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy and Bradley Parker, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the Social Security Administration’s Office of the Inspector General, Boston Field Division, jointly announced the charges. The investigation was spearheaded by the Office of Investigations, highlighting the agency’s commitment to rooting out fraud within the Social Security system.

Special Assistant U.S. Attorney James J. Nagelberg, from the Major Crimes Unit, is leading the prosecution. It’s a clear signal that federal authorities are taking this type of benefit theft seriously. Patterson is scheduled to appear in federal court in Boston at a later date.

It’s crucial to remember that these are merely allegations at this stage. Patterson is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as they become available.
