Ahmed AlSaadi, a 19-year-old resident of Troy, New York, has been sentenced to 24 months in prison for possessing a machinegun. The sentence was handed down by United States District Judge Mae A. D’Agostino.
The announcement of AlSaadi’s sentence was made by United States Attorney Carla B. Freedman, along with Craig L. Tremaroli, Special Agent in Charge of the Albany Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI); Bryan Miller, Special Agent in Charge of the New York Field Division of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF); and Troy Police Chief Daniel DeWolf.
During his earlier guilty plea, AlSaadi admitted to possessing three machinegun conversion devices and a Glock handgun that had been modified with a machinegun conversion device. This modification allowed the Glock to function as a machinegun. Additionally, AlSaadi admitted to advertising machinegun conversion devices for sale from March to July 2023.
The investigation into AlSaadi’s activities was conducted by the ATF, FBI, and the Troy Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Alexander Wentworth-Ping prosecuted the case, which resulted in AlSaadi’s guilty plea and subsequent sentencing.
As part of his sentence, AlSaadi will also serve a 3-year term of supervised release after his imprisonment. This supervision will begin immediately after his release from prison. The sentence reflects the seriousness of the crime of machinegun possession and the potential danger it poses to the community.
The case against AlSaadi highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies to combat the illegal possession and sale of machineguns and other prohibited firearms. The collaboration between federal and local agencies in this case demonstrates the commitment to keeping communities safe from the threat of violent crime.
In a statement, United States Attorney Carla B. Freedman emphasized the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions, particularly when it comes to the possession of prohibited firearms. The sentencing of Ahmed AlSaadi serves as a reminder of the consequences of engaging in such illegal activities and the dedication of law enforcement to preventing the spread of violent crime.
