DES MOINES, Iowa – The grimy tale of a trusted insurance salesman turned criminal mastermind has reached its conclusion. Zachary James Flaherty, 48, from Clive, was sentenced on June 12, 2024, to 18.5 years in federal prison for wire fraud and an additional six months for criminal contempt of court. The sentence followed Flaherty’s conviction for swindling over $3 million from elderly victims across Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska.
Flaherty’s fraudulent scheme spanned seventeen years, during which he convinced at least thirty individuals, mostly aged and financially naive, to part with their hard-earned savings. The oldest victim was 93 at the time of the fraud. With Flaherty’s charm and deceit, his victims’ retirement funds were depleted, leaving them vulnerable and destitute.
Flaherty preyed on his victims by building close relationships, offering companionship, gifts, and assistance with household tasks. At least six widowed individuals were among his targets, and Flaherty even helped arrange funerals for several of their spouses.
The defendant’s methods were varied: promising high returns on investments, false claims of penalty-free withdrawals, and misleading annuity purchases that he misrepresented as risk-free. Flaherty used the victims’ funds for personal gain, spending lavishly on himself, his family, and his businesses.
Flaherty also submitted forged documents to insurance companies, falsely representing his clients’ interests in annuities. His victims were financially unprepared for such long-term investments, and when Flaherty pressured them to withdraw funds or cancel annuities, they suffered devastating losses.
The court’s sentence was further compounded by Flaherty’s contempt of court charge, stemming from his disregard for orders to protect assets that could have been used for restitution. His victims spoke at the sentencing, describing how Flaherty’s actions shattered their trust and left them with little financial hope. Many lost nearly all their life savings, while others can no longer afford necessary medical care.
