Gonzalez Gunned Down by Federal Charges After St. Pete Shooting

TAMPA, FL – A St. Petersburg man is facing a potential 15-year federal prison sentence after admitting to illegally possessing a firearm connected to a New Year’s Day shooting. United States Attorney Roger B. Handberg announced today that Daniel Gonzalez, 23, pleaded guilty to one count of possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon.

The case stems from a January 1, 2023 incident where a 16-year-old was shot in a St. Petersburg parking garage. St. Petersburg Police Department officers quickly spotted a vehicle fleeing the scene and initiated a pursuit, cut short by deteriorating weather conditions. Shortly after, a Springfield Armory Hellcat 9mm pistol was discovered abandoned in the roadway along the vehicle’s escape route.

Evidence quickly mounted against Gonzalez. Forensic analysis revealed his DNA on two separate components of the recovered firearm. Crucially, ballistic testing confirmed that three cartridge cases recovered from the scene of the shooting matched the 9mm pistol bearing Gonzalez’s genetic material. This wasn’t a case of mistaken identity; the gun was directly linked to the crime.

Gonzalez’s prior criminal history seals his fate. As a convicted felon, he is legally barred from possessing any firearms or ammunition under federal law. The plea effectively acknowledges his violation and opens the door to a lengthy prison term. A sentencing date has not yet been scheduled, but federal prosecutors are expected to push for the maximum 15 years.

The investigation was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the St. Petersburg Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Samantha Newman is prosecuting the case, demonstrating a coordinated federal response to gun violence in the Tampa Bay area. This isn’t just about one gun; it’s about holding repeat offenders accountable.

This prosecution falls under the umbrella of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a Department of Justice initiative aimed at reducing violent crime through collaboration between law enforcement and local communities. Launched in 2021, PSN focuses on fostering trust, supporting community organizations, strategic enforcement, and measurable results – a full-court press to reclaim neighborhoods from the grip of violence. The DOJ is making it clear: illegally possessing firearms will not be tolerated.
