HARTFORD, CT – Hernan Ayala, 33, of Manchester, has admitted to a sickening pattern of sexual abuse against a minor female spanning over eight years. Ayala pleaded guilty today in Hartford federal court to charges of possession and production of child pornography, effectively confessing to a campaign of exploitation and recording the abuse on his cellphone.
The case began to unravel in March 2024 when the Manchester Police Department received a complaint detailing the years-long abuse. The victim bravely came forward, alleging that Ayala had subjected her to sexual conduct for more than eight years. A subsequent search of Ayala’s residence on March 9, 2024, yielded a trove of disturbing evidence – numerous videos and images documenting the abuse, all stored on his iPhone. Ayala has been held in custody since that date on related state charges.
United States Attorney David X. Sullivan for the District of Connecticut announced the guilty plea, stating Ayala waived his right to an indictment. The evidence presented in court paints a grim picture of calculated exploitation. The seized phone was a digital repository of the abuse, solidifying the case against Ayala. Investigators from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the Manchester Police Department, Glastonbury Police Department, and the Connecticut Center for Digital Investigations worked collaboratively on the investigation.
Ayala now faces a substantial prison sentence. He pleaded guilty to one count of possession of child pornography, carrying a maximum of 10 years imprisonment. More damningly, he also admitted to production of child pornography, a charge that carries a mandatory minimum of 15 years behind bars, with a maximum sentence of 30 years. U.S. District Judge Vernon D. Oliver is scheduled to deliver the sentence on September 30, and sources within the U.S. Attorney’s office indicate they will seek the maximum penalty.
This case is a stark reminder of the pervasive threat of child sexual abuse and exploitation. It is being prosecuted under the umbrella of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Project Safe Childhood Initiative, a program dedicated to protecting children from these horrific crimes. Sullivan specifically thanked the State’s Attorney’s Offices for the Judicial Districts of Hartford and Tolland for their assistance in bringing Ayala to justice.
