PENSACOLA, FLORIDA – Daniel R. McCaffrey, 41, formerly of Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, will spend the next 35 years in federal prison for a sickening trifecta of crimes: transporting child pornography, possessing it, and sexually abusing a minor female under the age of 12. The sentence, handed down today, barely scratches the surface of the depravity McCaffrey inflicted on innocent victims.
U.S. Attorney John P. Heekin didn’t mince words, stating, “There is no penalty severe enough for those who harm our children, and my office will continue to aggressively pursue maximum punishment for these types of crimes.” Heekin revealed the horrifying scope of McCaffrey’s offenses: not only did he exploit children online, but he also abused a child he had access to while stationed at Eglin Air Force Base. “The substantial sentence… reflects the severity of his crimes, but it cannot make up for the grave harm he has inflicted,” Heekin added.
The jury’s guilty verdict followed a grueling federal trial that laid bare McCaffrey’s depravity. Evidence showed he meticulously maintained a hidden collection of child pornography on a micro SD card, concealed within his residence, where he lived with his wife – an active duty United States Air Force service member – and their two young daughters. Witnesses provided damning testimony detailing the personal abuse inflicted upon the minor female victim, and the pornography revealed a disturbing focus on girls under 12.
“The FBI is committed to protecting the most vulnerable individuals in our communities, and especially our kids,” stated FBI Jacksonville Special Agent in Charge Jason Carley. “Those who abuse innocent children should know that the FBI and our partners will never stop working to identify you, and we will coordinate the full force of our resources to seek justice for your victims.” This case serves as a chilling reminder that predators can hide in plain sight, even within the ranks of those sworn to protect.
McCaffrey’s 35-year sentence is just the beginning. He will also face a lifetime of supervised release and will be required to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life. This investigation was a joint effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations, and the Air Force Office of Special Investigations. Assistant U.S. Attorneys David L. Goldberg and Jessica S. Etherton prosecuted the case.
This prosecution fell under Project Safe Childhood, a national initiative dedicated to combating child sexual exploitation. The Department of Justice launched the program in 2006, and it continues to mobilize federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute offenders, while also rescuing victims. The United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Florida remains committed to pursuing justice for these heinous crimes.
