CEDAR RAPIDS, IA – Benjamin Paul Egli, 30, of Tiffin, Iowa, will spend the next 37 years behind bars after being sentenced today for his role in a horrifying scheme to sexually exploit a toddler. Egli was sentenced by United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams after pleading guilty in December to conspiracy to sexually exploit a child and possession of child pornography – crimes that paint a sickening picture of calculated depravity.
Court documents detail a pattern of abuse spanning 2023. Egli actively participated in Snapchat and video calls with an accomplice in another state, directing her to commit sexually explicit acts with her own toddler child. Egli, at times located in North Liberty, Iowa, recorded these calls, effectively documenting the abuse. Beyond the live exploitation, Egli also received photographs and videos of the ongoing abuse from his accomplice.
The depravity didn’t end there. Investigators uncovered hundreds of images of child pornography on Egli’s devices. This included graphic depictions of children engaged in sexual acts, as well as images depicting sadistic and masochistic conduct. The sheer volume and nature of the material underscore the calculated and predatory nature of Egli’s actions. He wasn’t a bystander; he was an active participant and collector of this vile content.
Judge Williams imposed a sentence of 444 months imprisonment, alongside a $6,000 restitution order. Upon release, Egli will face a five-year term of supervised release. It’s crucial to remember: there is no parole in the federal system. Egli will serve every minute of that sentence. He is currently in the custody of the United States Marshals awaiting transport to a designated federal prison.
This case was pursued under Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched by the Department of Justice in 2006. The program aims to dismantle networks of child sexual abuse and bring predators to justice. Assistant United States Attorney Devra T. Hake led the prosecution, with critical investigative work conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the Tipton Police Department, and the Joint Forensic Analysis Cyber Team.
