BATON ROUGE, LA – Olvin Rodriguez-Inestroza, 22, a Honduran national unlawfully present in the United States, has admitted to a depraved act: distributing child pornography. The guilty plea, entered before U.S. Chief Judge Shelly D. Dick, marks a significant, albeit sickening, development in a case spearheaded by federal investigators.
According to court documents, Rodriguez-Inestroza wasn’t simply a passive collector of this vile material. He actively distributed it, leveraging internet accounts and a social media mobile application to spread images and videos of unimaginable abuse. A search of his smartphone revealed the depth of his depravity – at least 205 videos and approximately 325 images of child pornography, some depicting toddlers. This wasn’t a one-time offense; it was a calculated and disturbing pattern of behavior.
Acting United States Attorney Ellison C. Travis didn’t mince words, stating the severity of the crime demands serious consequences. Rodriguez-Inestroza now faces a minimum of five years and a maximum of 20 years behind bars. Beyond imprisonment, he’s looking at a hefty $250,000 fine and the potential for a lifetime of supervised release. Critically, a conviction on these charges also mandates sex offender registration, ensuring public awareness of his predatory actions.
But the repercussions don’t end with the criminal justice system. Rodriguez-Inestroza is also subject to removal and deportation from the United States once his sentence is served. This case underscores the link between immigration violations and serious criminal activity, a point increasingly emphasized by federal law enforcement. The investigation was a collaborative effort, involving the United States Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Security Investigations, the Louisiana Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the Baton Rouge Police Department.
Assistant United States Attorney Edward H. Warner, also serving as Deputy Criminal Chief, is prosecuting the case. This prosecution falls under the umbrella of Project Safe Childhood, a national initiative launched in 2006 to combat the escalating crisis of child sexual exploitation. Project Safe Childhood coordinates federal, state, and local resources to identify, apprehend, and prosecute those who prey on children online and rescue victims. This case is also connected to Operation Take Back America, a broader Department of Justice initiative aimed at addressing illegal immigration, dismantling transnational criminal organizations, and protecting communities from violent crime. Operation Take Back America leverages resources from Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN), signaling a comprehensive approach to border security and criminal prosecution. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the sentencing.
