MINNEAPOLIS – In a chilling turn of events, Vance Boelter, 57, has been indicted on six federal charges for the heinous crimes that shook Minnesota. The charges include the murders of Melissa and Mark Hortman, Speaker Emerita of the Minnesota House of Representatives, and the shootings of Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette, as well as an attempted shooting of their daughter Hope.
“Vance Boelter planned and executed a night of terror that has left our state in shock,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Joseph H. Thompson. “Today’s indictment is a step towards ensuring justice for the Hortman family and the Hoffmans.”
Court documents reveal an elaborate plot by Boelter, who disguised himself as a law enforcement officer to enter the homes of the targeted officials. The night began with the Hoffmans in Champlin, Minnesota, where Boelter shot Senator Hoffman multiple times, seriously wounding Yvette and attempting to harm Hope.
Afterward, Boelter moved on to the Hortman residence in St. Paul, shooting Representative Melissa and her husband Mark, both of whom died as a result of their injuries. A two-day manhunt followed before law enforcement captured Boelter near his home in Green Isle.
The defendant faces life in prison or even death for these offenses. Special Agent in Charge Alvin M. Winston Sr. of the FBI highlighted the collaboration between federal, state, and local agencies in bringing Boelter to justice: “Together, we will ensure that justice is served for the reign of terror Boelter unleashed.”
MnBCA Superintendent Drew Evans emphasized the gravity of the crime: “Boelter’s actions have caused unspeakable harm to our community. We are glad to see these next steps taken in holding him accountable.” The Brooklyn Park Police Chief Mark Bruley echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that political violence has no place in society.
