Andre Turman Sentenced for Gun Possession During Probation

Washington D.C. – Andre Jamar Turman, a 34-year-old repeat offender, was handed a 28-month federal prison sentence today for possessing a loaded pistol while on pretrial release. The charge stems from an incident where Turman was found with a Haskell Model JS-45 pistol during a search by U.S. Marshals and Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) detectives.

Turman, who had multiple cases pending against him, pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition by a felon on December 17, 2024. In addition to the prison term, he was ordered to serve three years of supervised release after his release from prison.

The search that led to Turman’s arrest occurred on May 4, 2023. He was apprehended at Twining Square Park in Southeast Washington, D.C., following numerous bench warrants and an outstanding arrest warrant.

According to court documents, the pistol recovered from Turman was unregistered in the District of Columbia and had been reported stolen. His previous convictions included carrying a pistol without a license, which landed him more than a year in prison.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia announced the sentence, with U.S. Marshal Robert Dixon, Special Agent in Charge Anthony Spotswood of ATF, and MPD Chief Pamela A. Smith joining in the press release.

This case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), MPD, and U.S. Marshals, while Assistant U.S. Attorneys Shezhad Akhtar and Chrisellen Rebecca Kolb handled the prosecution.
