Arizona Mom Pleads Guilty in Drunken Crash Endangering Kids

ALBUQUERQUE – Avedale Johnson, a 40-year-old member of the Navajo Nation from Arizona, has entered a guilty plea in federal court for her role in a booze-fueled high-speed crash that left three young children in peril. On May 4, 2024, Johnson reportedly barreled down U.S. Highway 491 at speeds topping 100 mph with three unbuckled minors under 12. She collided with another vehicle and made a dash from authorities, leaving the kids unharmed but shaken.

In court records, Johnson confessed to having consumed vodka prior to the incident. Her plea deal covers charges of abandonment or abuse of a child, though no death or great bodily harm occurred. The defendant could face up to three years in prison and five years of supervised probation following sentencing.

Acting U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison and Acting Special Agent in Charge Philip Russell of the FBI’s Albuquerque Field Office confirmed Johnson’s plea today. The Farmington Resident Agency of the FBI, with support from the Navajo Police Department and Department of Criminal Investigations, investigated the case. Assistant United States Attorney Caitlin L. Dillon is handling the prosecution.

This shocking incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by impaired driving, especially when children are involved. Johnson’s actions have not only endangered her own children but also put numerous lives at risk on the highway.

Johnson’s sentencing date has yet to be determined. In the meantime, the community is left grappling with the repercussions of this tragic event and urging stricter enforcement of laws regarding impaired driving and child safety.
