Seattle – In a brazen heist, a Russian national allegedly stole over 2 million credit card numbers and sold them online, authorities said.
Roman Valerevich Seleznev, 30, of Vladivostok, Russia, also known as ‘Track2,’ was charged with 40 counts in a superseding indictment, including wire fraud, computer hacking, and identity theft.
The indictment alleges that Seleznev hacked into retail point of sale systems between 2009 and 2013, installing malicious software to steal credit card numbers from various businesses.
‘The additions in this superseding indictment show how cybercriminals use the Internet not only to infiltrate and steal sensitive data, but also to teach other criminals how to navigate the credit-card selling underworld and get equipment that can be used to defraud U.S. citizens,’ said Assistant Attorney General Leslie R. Caldwell.
Seleznev is scheduled for trial on November 3, 2014, and will be arraigned on the new charges next week.
The indictment charges Seleznev with 11 counts of wire fraud, nine counts of intentional damage to a protected computer, nine counts of obtaining information from a protected computer, nine counts of possession of 15 or more unauthorized access devices and two counts of aggravated identity theft.
Seleznev’s alleged scheme involved selling stolen credit card data on a website known as ‘2pac.cc,’ and he is also charged in a separate indictment in the District of Nevada with participating in a racketeer influenced corrupt organization (RICO) and conspiracy to engage in a racketeer influenced corrupt organization.
The case is being investigated by the U.S. Secret Service Electronic Crimes Task Force, and is being prosecuted by Trial Attorney Ethan Arenson of the Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section and Assistant U.S. Attorneys Norman M. Barbosa and Seth Wilkinson of the Western District of Washington.
