SEATTLE – The federal hammer has fallen on alleged Russian cyber-criminal Roman Valerevich Seleznev, better known as ‘Track2,’ with a second superseding indictment that adds 11 counts to his list of charges. The feds have charged the 30-year-old Vladivostok native with over two million credit card numbers stolen and sold online.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Hayes called Seleznev’s actions a continuous crime spree, which even included creating an instructional website on how to misuse stolen credit cards. Assistant Attorney General Caldwell emphasized the government’s commitment to staying ahead of cybercriminals like Seleznev, aiming for justice through relentless investigation and prosecution.
The new charges include 11 counts of wire fraud, nine each of intentional damage to a protected computer, obtaining information from a protected computer, possession of unauthorized access devices, and two counts of aggravated identity theft. The trial is set for November 3, with arraignment on the additional charges expected next week.
Between October 2009 and October 2013, Seleznev allegedly infiltrated retail systems to steal credit card numbers, operating from servers worldwide and selling data on ‘2pac.cc.’ He also faces RICO-related charges in Nevada for racketeering and conspiracy. The investigation is a joint effort by the U.S. Secret Service and Seattle Police Department.
Seleznev’s criminal enterprise underscores the sophisticated nature of modern cybercrimes, where knowledge sharing and international collaboration enable criminals to exploit the digital landscape. His arrest serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against digital piracy and identity theft in the age of information.
