SEATTLE – In a bid to combat the ever-evolving world of cyber threats, key law enforcement leaders from across the nation gathered in Seattle for a high-stakes conference on cybercrime and intellectual property.
The summit, hosted by U.S. Attorney Jenny A. Durkan, marked an unprecedented opportunity for attorneys from various districts to exchange strategies and insights on countering cybercrimes that transcend geographical boundaries.
“This is a great opportunity to share strategies on countering cybercrimes which know no geographic boundaries,” Durkan emphasized. “Meeting in Seattle gives U.S. Attorneys from across the country the chance to appreciate the impacts on every sector of our economy – and to hear from our strong high-tech community.”
Among the participants were Rod Rosenstein from the District of Maryland, Sarah Saldaña from the Northern District of Texas, Melinda Haag from the Northern District of California, Carmen Ortiz from the District of Massachusetts, Laura Duffy from the Southern District of California, Carter Stewart from the Southern District of Ohio, Karen Loeffler from the District of Alaska, and John M. Bales from the Eastern District of Texas. U.S. Attorney David Hickton of the Western District of Pennsylvania joined the conference via video link.
Monday’s agenda saw Hickton announce indictments and an injunction in a computer malware scheme known as Cryptolocker, underscoring the conference’s focus on real-world cyber threats.
Joining the U.S. Attorneys were experts from the FBI and DOJ’s National Security Division, including Josh Goldfoot, Deputy Chief of Law and Policy, Mick Stawasz, Deputy Chief of Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section, and Tim Wallach, Supervisory Special Agent with the FBI. Kev Kubiak, Director of the National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center, provided a video conference briefing on intellectual property issues.
