New Orleans Postal Worker Faces 5-Year Jail Term for Embezzlement
A 28-year-old New Orleans postal worker has pleaded guilty to embezzling $450 in cash from a mail package, according to a federal court document.
Chanel M. Mcginnis, a resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, entered a guilty plea in federal court before U.S. District Judge Nannette Jolivette Brown to embezzlement of mail matter by a postal employee, announced U.S. Attorney Dana J. Boente.
According to court documents, on or about February 7, 2011, Mcginnis, while being an employee of the United States Postal Service, embezzled $450 in United States currency that was contained in a first-class letter addressed to W.B., a resident of Metairie, Louisiana.
If convicted, Mcginnis faces a maximum term of imprisonment of five years, a fine of $250,000 and three years of supervised release following any term of imprisonment. Sentencing is set for August 22, 2013.
The case was investigated by the United States Postal Service- Office of Inspector General and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Loan "Mimi" Nguyen.
Mcginnis’ guilty plea and upcoming sentencing serve as a reminder of the importance of accountability in public office and the need for continued vigilance in preventing and investigating cases of embezzlement and abuse of power.
