A former high-ranking official in the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office has pleaded guilty to defrauding the sheriff’s office and other businesses in Louisiana, according to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Louisiana.
Kevin Stimage, a 44-year-old former Captain with the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office, admitted to one count of Theft from Programs Receiving Federal Funds, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 666(a)(1)(A).
The federal investigation revealed that Stimage had been defrauding the sheriff’s office, Off-Duty Detail A, and Off-Duty Detail B by claiming to work more hours than he actually did. According to the charges, Stimage worked an average of 40 hours per week at the sheriff’s office, 40 hours per week at Off-Duty Detail A, and 30 hours per week at Off-Duty Detail B, for a total of approximately 110 hours per week.
However, location data and surveillance showed that Stimage was only working a portion of the claimed hours, resulting in a loss of $158,275 for Off-Duty Detail A, $54,215 for Off-Duty Detail B, and $28,596 for the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Stimage faces up to 10 years in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, a $250,000 fine, and a mandatory special assessment of $100. Sentencing is set for September 21, 2021, in New Orleans, Louisiana.
U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans praised the work of the Federal Bureau of Investigation on this matter. The prosecution is being handled by Assistant United States Attorneys Myles Ranier and Chandra Menon.
