PHILADELPHIA, PA – Aaron Douglas, 31, of Philadelphia, is headed to federal prison for 7.5 years after admitting to peddling guns on the streets of the City of Brotherly Love. Douglas was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Mark A. Kearney to 90 months’ imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release, for illegally distributing three firearms and unlawfully possessing a fourth. The case underscores the relentless flow of illegal weapons fueling violence in the region.
Between January and April of last year, Douglas acted as a shadow gun dealer, acquiring and selling three semi-automatic handguns. The firearms – a 9mm Smith & Wesson Model SW9VE, a 9mm Beretta Model APX, and a 9mm Glock Model 47 – were all illegally obtained and funneled into an already oversaturated market. Authorities didn’t specify *how* Douglas obtained the weapons, only that he was moving them without a license or regard for the potential consequences.
The FBI brought the heat, executing a search warrant on Douglas’ North Philadelphia residence. Inside, they found a .45 caliber Glock Model 30 semi-automatic pistol. The problem? Douglas, a convicted felon from a 2015 firearms offense, was legally barred from owning *any* firearm. The discovery added another layer to the charges and ultimately contributed to the lengthy sentence.
“Every illegal gun taken off the street is a small victory in our fight against violent crime,” stated U.S. Attorney Jacqueline C. Romero. While the statement sounds like boilerplate, it highlights the grim reality of gun violence in Philadelphia and the ongoing efforts to stem the tide. Romero’s office, along with federal partners, vowed to continue targeting illegal gun trafficking operations.
Federal agents aren’t shy about crediting teamwork. Wayne A. Jacobs, Special Agent in Charge of FBI Philadelphia, emphasized the collaborative effort, stating the case illustrates their commitment to safer neighborhoods. Eric DeGree, Special Agent in Charge of the ATF Philadelphia Field Division, added that gun trafficking “puts our communities at risk” and carries serious federal penalties.
The case was prosecuted under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a multi-agency initiative aimed at reducing violent crime. Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael R. Miller led the prosecution, with the investigation spearheaded by the FBI and the ATF. While one man is off the streets, the pipeline of illegal firearms remains a constant threat, demanding continued vigilance from law enforcement.
