On January 24, 2012, federal authorities in New Jersey indicted Aaron Hernandez, a former NFL tight end, on a series of violent crime charges. Hernandez, born on November 6, 1989, in Bristol, Connecticut, was arrested and charged with murder, racketeering, and other related crimes. The case, HERNANDEZ, was filed in the New Jersey District Federal Court.
The charges against Hernandez stemmed from a string of violent incidents, including the murder of Odin Lloyd, a semi-professional football player who was found dead on June 17, 2013, in an industrial park in North Attleboro, Massachusetts. Lloyd, who was dating the sister of Hernandez’s fiancée, was shot multiple times and left in a deserted area. The prosecution alleged that Hernandez had orchestrated Lloyd’s murder due to a falling out.
As the investigation unfolded, authorities uncovered a web of violence and intimidation allegedly perpetrated by Hernandez and his associates. The racketeering charges were linked to a series of armed robberies and shootouts in the Boston area, which left several individuals injured or dead.
On April 15, 2015, Hernandez was convicted of first-degree murder in the Lloyd case and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. In addition, he faced a separate trial in the federal court, where he was found guilty of racketeering and conspiracy charges. Hernandez was subsequently sentenced to an additional life term in federal prison, with the sentences to run concurrently.
On April 19, 2017, Hernandez was found dead in his cell at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley, Massachusetts. The cause of death was determined to be a self-inflicted hanging. Hernandez was 27 years old at the time of his death.
