Jamil King, Cocaine Possession with Intent to Distribute, New Jersey 2022

NEWARK, N.J. – Jamil King, 32, of Jersey City, is facing a lengthy prison sentence after a federal jury found him guilty today of possessing with intent to distribute cocaine. The conviction comes after a two-day trial before U.S. District Court Judge Esther Salas, with the jury needing just two hours to deliver the verdict. King, identified as a high-ranking member of the notorious Parkside street gang, now awaits sentencing and the reckoning for his criminal enterprise.

The bust went down on the evening of July 8, 2022, when law enforcement executed a search warrant at King’s Jersey City residence. King didn’t stick around to cooperate. He bolted, but officers recovered approximately 50 grams of cocaine stashed inside a pair of sweatpants. Crucially, DNA evidence linked the defendant directly to the garment – his DNA was found on the sweatpants, matching the sweatshirt he was wearing the night of the raid. The evidence painted a clear picture: King was actively involved in moving weight.

Prosecutors successfully argued that King wasn’t just holding onto the coke for personal use. The amount, combined with his ties to the Parkside gang, established intent to distribute. The Parkside gang has long been a thorn in Jersey City’s side, and this conviction is being hailed as a significant blow to their operations. This isn’t a simple possession charge; it’s a strike against a player in a larger criminal network.

U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger, the lead prosecutor on the case, praised the collaborative effort of multiple agencies. The Jersey City Police Department, spearheaded by Director James Shea, was instrumental in the initial investigation. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, under Acting Special Agent in Charge Ross A. Marchetti, also provided critical support. This case highlights the power of coordinated law enforcement when taking on serious criminal actors.

This prosecution fell under the umbrella of the Jersey City Violent Crime Initiative (VCI), a multi-agency task force formed in 2018 to specifically target violent crime in and around Jersey City. The VCI includes representatives from federal, state, county, and city agencies, demonstrating a unified front against criminal activity. The sheer number of agencies involved—FBI, ATF, DEA, U.S. Marshals, Homeland Security Investigations, Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office, and more—shows the scale of the problem and the commitment to solving it.

Jamil King now faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Sentencing is scheduled for October 23, 2024. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Desiree Grace and Joseph Stern, of the Office’s Criminal and General Crimes Units respectively, secured the conviction. For King, the game is over. He’ll have plenty of time to reflect on his choices from behind bars. The streets of Jersey City are a little safer tonight, thanks to this successful operation.
