A brazen drive-by shooting at the Portland Police Department Headquarters shook the community in July 2020. On July 5, 2020, Abdikareem Hassan, 33, fired approximately five shots from a black Hyundai Tucson at the police station.
Law enforcement recovered a gun with Hassan’s DNA on it near the scene of the shooting and bullet casings on the windshield of the Hyundai. Hassan was arrested during the early morning hours of July 6, 2020.
Hassan is prohibited from possessing firearms due to a prior felony conviction. He pleaded guilty on July 30, 2021, to being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Chief U.S. District Judge Jon D. Levy sentenced Hassan to four years in prison followed by three years of supervised release. In pronouncing the sentence, Judge Levy stated that Hassan’s conduct posed a ‘grave danger to the community’ and reflected ‘complete disregard for the welfare of other people.’
U.S. Attorney Darcie N. McElwee emphasized the importance of holding individuals accountable for violent crimes. ‘Violence directed at anyone, including law enforcement officers, cannot be tolerated,’ she said.
The FBI and the Portland Police Department investigated the case with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Hassan’s actions were a stark reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers every day. His sentence serves as a warning to those who would engage in similar violence.
